GordoSD is correct, you need a private applicator's license although you can have someone whom has a license buy the product and he then will "oversee" your usage. I believe there are three sizes of fertilizer augers, low, medium, and high. We had the medium which worked well for 2X2 corn placement. You need to get a operators's manual which will give fertilizer rates with the various sprockets/augers. Chemical suppliers can calibrate newer insecticide boxes and perhaps also herbicide, but their equipment will not work on a 400. The operator's manual suggests correct settings, and we did use it but they were about 30% high on insecticide. If you are planting quite a few acres, it will pay to you to expend the effort and calibrate them. That is one reason we bought to a newer planter; ie, could have the supplier calibrate the insecticide boxes. Not many dry herbicides, although we consider using Surpass 20G granular one year with the 400 since it had the required extra boxes. This product with atrazine added is called FulTime and covers more weeds, but I don't believe it is available as a granular. Since the herbicide options are so limited, we didn't consider having herbicide boxes when looking for a newer planter.
