Replacing SM brakes is straightforward: First unscrew the actuating/adjusting rod from the yoke that goes into the brake. Now remove the long bolts holding the brake cover to the transmission. Then simply pull the cover off, rotating as required to clear the drawbar support bracket on the axle. One of the friction disks will be left on the splined half shaft - the other will be inside the cover, underneath the center actuating disk assembly. Lift the actuating disk out of the cover to get at the other friction disk.

Simply reverse the procedure to reassemble. Sounds a lot more difficult than it really is...

A couple of notes: 1 - While you've got everything apart, remove the springs that hold the two halves of the actuating disk together and separate the two halves. Make sure the ramps and balls inside are free of rust and junk, then lube with a little dry graphite before putting back together. 2 - Wire brush the transmission half shaft splines to get them clean, then lightly coat them with Never Sieze before reinstalling the brake disks. 3 - Make sure the friction disks and mating iron surfaces are free of grease and oil before putting back together
