If the magneto switch is in the off position, it is effectively shut off. No harm will come to it. The harm from disconnected plug wires is caused by the excess voltage taking any possible path to ground. This can begin the process of leaving carbon tracks, or short circuit paths for the High Voltage. Just leave the switch in the stop position, and crank as needed. Do not crank more than 30 seconds at a time, then leave it cool for 2 minutes. Starter motors have a 20% duty cycle or so, and will overheat if run for long periods. JimN
