About 10 years I bought an aftermarket set of bands for a customers M. They were to long to adjust up. I ended up cutting 5/16in out of the metal and welding them back, worked fine then. Since then I take them to a clutch and brake shop and have them relined, about the same price but with the softer compound they use in linings they work a lot better.
