I'm putting bearings in the M and tonight I was replacing the pto bearing and cleaning it up . From what I can see there are two different areas that could cause the problem , the bushing in the countershaft or the sleeve and after reading the post about the thick oil that could be it also . The sleeve just requires the oil be drained and the pto pulled , taken apart and cleaned . Turn the shaft with the tractor not running and the pto disengaged . It should feel snug but not tight with NO or very little fore or aft movement . The bushing might be a bigger problem . It's hard to get out with the countershaft on the bench so doing it two feet inside a hole six inches across might be difficult . I had to cut mine out with a hacksaw blade . Good luck ! ...Randy
Oh yeah It could be the shifter shaft is worn out too . That's also a oil drain and remove . In case you've never removed a pto on a H it's easy . This way will remove the whole housing . Find a piece of pipe that fits snug over the shaft about two feet long or a little longer for leverage , remove the oil in the rearend , remove the bolts holding the outer diameter of the housing , while counter balancing the shaft pull it out straight . Ya might have to twist it some to get it out of the bushing up front . If ya have to twist a lot you have a bushing problem . To remove the shaft from the housing remove the two bolts and the oil seal/bearing retainer . Then pull or bump the shaft out the hole you just opened up till the bearing is free of the housing a little ways and work it off the shifter lug . Then you can remove the sleeve . The rest is evident if you want to renew the bearing . Tap the new bearing on gently until the nut has full threads then use it to push the bearing on the rest of the way and tighten pretty good with a screwdriver in the cross drilled hole on the end of the shaft to hold it . add the washer and the jam nut and tighten very good and bend the washer back .
