It does matter which side: It goes on the side of the amp gauge not connected to the battery. The generator terminals should be all ignored. they are all either direct ground, or ground through the resistor (usually a flat piece of flaky mica, or asbestos) this stuff is no longer needed due to the alt. The switch positions are, from full CCW: Low Charge (now not used and therefore OFF) High Charge (now not used and thus OFF as above) Dim front Lights connected through the resistor, and rear light on High All lights full on rear and front. Stay away from the grounded terminals on the switch, they are cutout relay style generator use only. JimN
