once you have a noisy crown & pinion you have to live with it.you wont get rid of the whine or howl because it is already worn in.if your putting in a used one you have to know it was quiet. you need the backlash measurement and pattern before taking it apart so it can be set to the same specs.the only real guarantee to no noise is a new crown&pinion , you wont want to go there on an old tractor.
