Paul: There are several parts that you could be talking about. Could be the end of the shift lever worn, which you can build up as terry suggests. When you say freezing is it that the lever wont move, or does the lever jump out of the shift rail. if the lever is jumping out of shift rail then end of shift lever is worn. It could be the shift rail worn, but I doubt it.
If the end of the shift lever being worn is your problem, then build it up with welding to the size of notch it fit in rail. Build it just a bit over size then grind it to shape and enough so it shifts smoothly. This is common for Farmall tractors after 30-35 years. We had to build up the shift lever on loader tractors every 5 years, mainly due to the amount of shifting compared to non loader tractors.
If the lever is just locking in the 1 st gear position, then I suspect your problem is frozen detent ball. There are notches on each of those shift rails and a detent ball and spring designed to hold the rails where you position them. For example, when you put the tractor in 1st gear, the detent ball holds it there. At the same time the detent balls on reverse rail and on the 3rd-4th rail hold those two in neutral. If one of those balls and spring get rusted, it may go in easy, but not back out so easy. By the same sign if a spring breaks the tractor may pop out of gear, as without the spring there is nothing to hold it.
