To do it RIGHT a genny shop would change out the field coils. It may be cheaper to buy a salvage 12 volt unit or even have an existing 12 volt refurbished......... Ive used 6 volt gennys and just changed to a 12 volt Voltage Regulator and they worked Im NOT saying thats correct or that it charged at any high rate Im ONLY saying Ive done it and it charged and the field coils (which may be drawing more current then designed for) held up okay.
Unless its a big tractor like an M most others should start fine at the original 12 volts provided you use a big heavy battery and 00 Gauge cables.
If theres any old fashioned mom n pop starter/genny repair shops near you (we still have one) ask them for 6/12 conversion cost estimates or replacement units.
