Usually this is caused by a bad pilot bearing on the front of the mainshaft. It rides inside the input shaft and when the bearing gets worn it no longer holds the mainshaft and input shaft in alignment allowing the fifth gear spline to walk apart under a little load. If the bearing is good the splines can be quite poor on both the input shaft and fifth gear and still not cause a problem.
