The correct way to adjust the clutch is on a flat surface. They will be two adjustment measurements. One is the distance between the friction surface of the cast plate and the underside of the clutch cover at the mounting bolt holes. The other measurement is the distance between the friction surface of the cast plate and the levers at the point where the release bearing make contact. These dimensions are installed heights so you need some way to hold either the cover or the levers at the correct dimension while you make the adjustment to get the other dimension correct. It is one of the last steps the rebuilders do when remanufacturing a pressure plate assembly. These adjustments are made to very close specs, usually within a couple thousands of an inch. All the rebuilders I know of do not want any field adjustments made to their rebuilt units. If there is a problem they will exchange it.
