If you have a ballast resistor between the ignition switch & coil it could be defective. You need to see if there's battery voltage from the ignition switch to the coil when the switch is in the on position. Check at the switch first to make sure there's voltage on the terminal going to the coil. If there's no voltage present on that terminal see if you have lights. Could be a bad switch if there's lights.
If you have voltage on the terminal make sure your points are open and check for voltage on the coil's terminals. If there's no voltage check the feed wire to the switch for voltage that's usually fed from the starter's solenoid. That little terminal is hot all the time.
