Not tapered, splined. Mine was easy to pull. That may have had to do with fact that the nut was loose more than anything else--splines probably got a little wore. Remember, when you hammer the shaft you are also moving the thrust bearing and that will fight you as well.
I got a pair of channel locks on it and lifted. Easy as can be.
