From what I can tell you, owning an I-4, which is basically the same, the starter is tuff to get out without removing the belt pulley assembly, but it can be done. Last time mine was out, I took all the bolts out that would come out without removing the belt pulley asembly, the using a pry bar, I raised the cover as far as I caopuld get it to move, and the starter slid right out. Also put it back in like that. I have also heard of one guy that took the starter apart ON there tractor, then removed the 2 bolts holding it in.Gives alot more play room.Some just remove the belt pulley assembly to do the job, and other find or make a cover plate for the assembly and never worry about it again.When you say you cut out the starter, how did you do that, did you cut the accual starter out, or cut the cover? IF you cut the cover, mught as well look ofr another one.
