IHC sales lit. gives 10 mph at 1400 rpm. It is true you won't get any speeding tickets, but it is also true that this is a very useful speed around a farm and especially on farm trails and unpaved country roads. Throttled back a bit, you still have enough torque to pull a loaded wagon on a rough road. The H and M were originally listed at 15-5/8 and 16-1/4 at full-load, full-throttle setting. Too fast for trails and rough gravel roads, and throttled-back, there isn"t a lot of torque to let you tootle along with a loaded wagon on such roads at say 7 mph. The IHC brochure for the H and M shows minimum speeds in fifth gear as 9-1/2 for the H and 10-5/8 for the M, which is another way of saying that much below those speeds, the engine is going to be running at pretty close to idle. The sales brochure I have doesn"t specify tire sizes. Speeds would vary just a little depending on tires. Presume some of the "fatter" tires people use today might raise the speeds a bit. I have very vivid memories of trying to pull loaded wagons over gravel roads in fourth gear, roaring wide-open at just under 6 mph because the H would not pull a load at that speed in fifth gear. John Deere and Oliver had two road speeds. Their fifth speed was somewhere around 8 mph, as I recall, and that would have allowed a comfortable speed with plenty of torque to handle the load.
