Hi Joe, we bought a B414 new in 1962 and it had only 1 large 12V battery. The older B250 had 2x6V in series. Your starting method will work until it gets cool. In warm weather we would only have to use the glow plugs for first start in the morning. As someone else replied your hissing problem is probably a corroded connection at the battery. The B414 was originally a (+)positive ground tractor but someone may have modified it and installed an alternator. The other problem could be internal to the battery. I had that happen to my car battery where one of the internal connections between the cells went open.
If you have to replace the battery, buy the largest capacity battery that will fit in the battery box.
