If you replace the cables, make sure you get good heavy ones - bigger is better. The replacements typically sold at auto parts stores and farm stores are way too light for turning over a big engine. You probably want at least 1/0 or 2/0 wire size, which you won't find on display.
An old line auto parts house may be able to get truck cables. Any place that services heavy equipment can ether get them or make them for you. I've also made my own using welding cable and crimp/solder terminals.
