dwsc, The spring has a long and short end. Hook the long end through a hole in the mechanism behind carburetor, it is at the highest point of the mechanism and the spring pulls forward to the post at front of engine. When it is in its proper position it will be in a flat line with the head gasket. The whole intake shaft rotates up for gas down for diesel. On the back side you will find a V shaped lever which is operated by a vertical linkage with a flat bar that fits in the V. Good luck, Chuck
