Allan says it's normal. Some amount is normal, but we don't know how much of this black stuff you're talking about... I've personally never experienced black oily spray, and between myself and my dad, we have seven 4-cylinder Farmall gassers. But, that's not saying a little bit of black stuff isn't normal for an "outdoors" tractor.
However, if you're talking about massive quantities of black oily spray, then there is a problem. You shouldn't get an oil shower every time you start the tractor.
I've got to say that if you're trying to pull start the tractor, something is wrong. The only reason to pull start a gasser is if the battery is dead, and then if it doesn't pop right off and run in a few feet, there is something wrong that needs to be fixed.
Those old Farmall gassers don't need much to start if the carb is clean and the ignition is in good shape and timed correctly. Unless, there are major internal engine problems.
