Cody, I used a puller, but I put a big bearing separator behind it and clamped it tight, and put the puller on that. That way, the pressure is on the fat part of the pulley, not the edges.
Also, the end of my crank is internally threaded. I had to clean a lot of dirt out of the center of the pulley to realize that. I put a long bolt in that, to stick out beyond the pulley, to have something for the screw of the puller to push against. Even then, I drilled a small divot in the head of the bolt so that the point of the puller screw wouldn't 'walk' around. Even THEN, I had to make sure the screw of the puller was perpendicular to the bolt.
I only had propane for heat, but I heated it until it was too hot to touch, but even then, I had to crank on the puller more than I thought was prudent. Sucker was on TIGHT!
