I had a similar problem with my 424 two years ago. It would run fine and then surge for a bit and finally die. I thought it had to do with being hot too. My problem was due to worn parts in the carb. It had sat for a while with no gas and the valve assembly rubber tip dried inside and was stuck shut and wouldnt open to let fuel in. I found a Marvel Schebler rebuild kit at my local NAPA store and put the new valve in. There is also an electric fuel shut off valve connected to your carb if it is defective it could shut off periodically. Also check for any obstructions plugging the tank up. I had a seed from a tree fall in my tank and plug it up. It also gave a surge feeling as it would struggle for gas. I got it out by disconnecting the fuel line and used a air compressor to blow it out of the hole then grabbed it with a claw. And if you disconnect the line after the bowl and you arnt getting a steady stream you may just need to clean the bowl Check the tank and bowl first then the carb. Check the tank first then the carb.
