If you get it tore down and the block and/or head are no good, then you got shafted and have a right to be mad. Otherwise, you got what you paid for.
The A on the other hand... Maybe he was trying to put one over on you, maybe not... It's very plausible that he was ignorant/inexperienced enough that he thought the magneto was the reason it wasn't running right. He doesn't have X-ray eyes and couldn't have known about the cracked block and head. You'd have to tear down the engine before you bought the tractor (not likely to happen) to know it had a cracked head and block.
If there's evidence that it's been recently tore down and put back together, he put one over on you, and you have a right to be peeved. Otherwise, give 'em the benefit of the doubt: He didn't know about the internal problems, and you bought as-is, where-is.
