There are a lot of good things that can be said for the 300 U, like good strong power, live hydraulics, maybe power steering, independent PTO, plus others. But "easy on gas" is not one of its fine points. And the disc brakes can be a constant problem. The fast hitch is good, but not the equal of a true 3 pt.
I have had my 300 U for 30 years and it has done a lot of work including pulling the baler and trail wagon, but if you have hills on your hay fields, then you don't have enough tractor weight to control the baler and flat bed. We came very close to a couple of serious accidents as the baler and wagon jack-knifed on the down hill pushing the tractor. It is like a big accordian coming closed.
The 164 cu inch engine on the 300 U is a much tougher engine than the Continental Z 129 on the TO 30, but it is fitted with the M carb, making it much thirstier than the 152 cu inch H engine, and very much thirstier than the Cont Z 129.
