Mags are the same whether they're on a Cub of a W9. You don't need to go to a specialized website just because you have a particular model of tractor, and I would think it insulting to be told "Go away!" when you reveal that you have that particular tractor...

There's a link to "Serial Numbers" on the left of every page here at ytmag.com. You'll find it interesting that, if 2788 is the actual serial number, that it's a 1947 model, the first year they were made, and a very early 1947 model at that.

It falls in the group of mystical "Circle Cubs" which were Cubs that originally came with a circular Cub logo on the hood doglegs that run down each side of the radiator.

Magneto is very similar to a standard distributor ignition in the basic parts. They definitely have points and a coil, and I think they have condensors as well. Typical old-fasioned breaker point style ignition. The major difference is the magneto provides its own power.

Could be many different things wrong with it... Magnets demagnetized... Rusty points... Bad coil or condensor... Bad impulse mechanism...

Do you get a "SNAP!" from the mag when you crank the engine over to start it? That indicates a good impulse mechanism.

It is possible to bypass most of the magneto and use it as a simple distributor by adding a conventional battery ignition coil and a battery. At least you could hear it run. I'm not 100% sure of the exact details on where to go with the second terminal on the coil, though...
