Someone had tried the overfill trick on my 404 before I got it. All it managed to do was cause excessive load on the engine and make fluid leak from the trans top cover and shifter.
The system holds a little over 7 gallons and should work fine without being overfilled provided the pump is good. I fixed mine by replacing the plugged filter and water saturated fluid.
I'd start with getting all of the filter parts back in place and the correct amount of fresh fluid in the system...
