I'm a bit confused when you say retaining nut on the steering box. Do you mean the plug, or the nut on the end of the steering shaft that holds the bearing?? You must take the big plug with the hex on the front of the steering box out before you can remove the steering shaft. I forget what size the hex is, but it takes a big socket to fit it. I use a 3/4 drive 6 point socket of the proper size and have never had a problem getting one out that way. Other wrenches, including a pipe wrench just seem to end up rounding off the hex and then it's really a mess. Once you have the plug out and the universal joint loose, the shaft should screw right out of the steering box. And yes there is supposed to be oil in the steering box. However, most of the old Ms have bad seals on the vertical shaft and the gear oil specified for them just leaks out. You can go to the trouble of repairing the surface of the vertical shaft, installing new bushings, etc., or you can just fill the box with chassis grease which seems to work just fine.
