Kidd, If I understand your post, youre still using the 6 volt genny correct?? I have used 6 volt gennys to charge at 12 volts simply by using a 12 volt Voltge Regulator and she worked NOTE Im NOT saying thats engineering correct or charged at any super high rate, ONLY that it worked although you could overheat the gennys field windings.
Next, you should have POLARIZED the Genny before you started the tractor if you changed battery polarity cuz you could damage the Voltage Regulator.
You need to decide what Polarity youre going to use,,,,,,,,,,,POLARIZE the genny (before starting),,,,,,,If you stay at the original polarity the ammeter should register correct buttttttttttt if you have switched polarity then you gotta swap ammeter leads as Bob suggested so it wont read bass ackwards.
If its a coil ignition the coil needs reversed if you change polarity. If at Pos ground the coils lil - gets ignition switch fed voltage while its other lil + wires to distributor but reverse that if at Neg ground.
