Jim, You are right about the brakes working with captive oil that was already there from the last time the tractor was ran, but you can still feel the power assist on the brakes when it is working correctly. The questions you raise are good ones, and since I cannot say that I can give you an honest answer at this time, I plan to run the followning test. It might take a while until I get over to where my tractor is to run the test, but here is what I plan to do: 1. Start the tractor. Do not turn the steering wheel until step 4 below. 2. Drive the tractor straight ahead slowly. Operate TA a few times. Does the TA work? 3. Apply the brakes. Can I feel power assist? 4. Try the steering. Does it work? Here is what I plan to learn from these tests. If either or both the TA and the power brakes seem to work at first startup, but the power steering does not work, then I will lean toward replacing the manual pump that is attached to the steering wheel. If the TA and the power brakes do not seem to work at first startup, then I will suspect the MCV pump as you have suggested. If the TA and power brakes seem to begin to work about the same time that the power steering starts to work, then I will be more confident that the cause is a bad MCV pump. Thanks a lot for the suggestion.

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
