The number of wires up to the dash depends on if its a 3 or 4 terminal Volatge Regulator orrrrrrrr a two wire Cutout Relay.
VOLTAGE REGULATOR
If a tractor has a 4 terminal (BAT ARM FLD LOAD) Voltage Regulator, there are TWO wires up to the dash.
1) L terminal feeds hot battery voltage to the lights/ignition input terminal. 2) BAT terminal wires to the Load (NOT battery/starter) side of ammeter
If a tractor only has a 3 terminal (BAT ARM FLD) VR, theres only one wire up to dash
1) BAT terminal wires up to the Load (NOT battery/starter) side of ammeter
On many 4 terminal VR's the terminal on the bottom or off on one side by itself is the ARM terminal.
BAT on VR to ammeters Load terminal FLD on VR to gennys FLD post ARM/GEN on VR to gennys ARM post L on VR (if a 4 terminal) wires to lights/ignition switches input
CUTOUT RELAY (2 wires up to dash area)
BAT side of Relay wires to Load (NOT battery/starter) side of ammeter. Relays other GEN/ARM terminal wires to Gennys ARM post

To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
