farmall H electrical problem

I recently purchased a 1942 farmall H that has a 12 volt system. I don't believe the alternator is charging. I understand that some sort of an exciter voltage has to be introduced to the alternator to get it to charge. I would appreciate any suggestions anyone can give me concerning a hook up to accomodate this. I have a 1947 H that has the original 6 volt system and it has no problem. Thanks, Ed
