If you're breaking pitman sticks, it might be because the mower is totally out of adjustment. I think an owners manual will provide the specific details, but basically, the outer end of the sickle bar needs to be slightly ahead, or forward of the inner end where it is attached. Also, when the sickle reaches the end of its stroke, just at the point where it reverses direction, the mower sections need to be in the exact center of the guards. As far as how often to grease? Again, the owners manual will provide the exact details, but if I remember right, that ol' number 5 needs grease at both ends of the pitman stick at least once every hour.
