Frank, I thought that my Super A's serial number was worn off too. I could read 5 digits in broad daylight, and mine should've had 6.
It took a dark barn and an LED flashlight to reveal the 6th digit. The right type of light will do wonders.
Look for date codes as BobM suggested. It won't get you the serial number but you'll get a year.
Codes are in the format MM-DD-X, where MM is month, DD is day, and X is a letter code for a year.
Yours will be Z, A, or B. Z is a 1954. A is 1955, and B is 1956.
It's interesting what you can learn from the date codes. Just last week, I noticed that Dad's Super M had one axle housing with a "W" (1951) code from some time in December and one with an "X" (1952) code that is more in line with the rest of the castings on the tractor, April 1952, I think.
To me that indicates that the maybe axle housing was damaged at some point, and was replaced with one off a 1951 M or one off the parts shelf that had been sitting around since 1951.

Experimentation, from the most complex assembly to the most simple and mundane component, is as an integral a part of any farm tractor's development
