I connected mine in what's called a 3 wire set up. Term 1 wire through a diode to the ignition switch and coil.
Term 2 to the battery terminal on the alternator. The bat terminal is then wired to the neg side of ampMeter (which is also wired to supply power to the ignition switch), and the positive side of the ampMeter is wired to the bat and bat side of the starter solenoid.
I think you have a single wire set up which works good, but needs higher rpm's to start charging.
