I think you're just referring to the differences between a 1 way and two way valve. the 2 way runs a line to each end of a cylinder for power each direction; the 1 way runs a line to only 1 side (usually lift) and depends on gravity to drop the load back down after pressure is released on the line. In this case, the end of the cylinder not receiving pressure usually gets a vent/filter.
