Maybe you have already done this but start simple. In gas mode open drain on carb. Do you have good gas flow? When carb was off did the round plate on top with screw have a air gap? All pasages and jets clear? With the 2 piece choke shaft sometimes the inside shaft freezes up and it bends choke plate. Small passages for fuel air mixture end in big intake port above intake valve. If butterflies don"t close properly it will hurt the suction through small passages to carb. Only thing starting valves do when open is lower compression and open path for fuel mixture to spark plugs. Mixture goes into cylinder through intake valve. So if you have a good fuel flow from bottom of carb, good spark at correct time and runs good on diesel and no fuel mixture on plugs the problem is limited to. Air blockage from intake to carb, carb blockage fuel or air, intake passage block or leak to cylinder or starting valves not opening.
