Yup that is it!!!! Electronic Ignition (when on not running) supplies full rated running voltage to the coil 100% of the time. This compares to about 30 % of the time (or so) when the engine runs. This is not an operational situation for the heat load of the coil, ballast resistor (if any) or the electronics of the electronic ignition. Duty cycle is important, and often ignored. Points could handle the issue a bit better, but still often got hot. Coils are also heat affected in the same way. Shutting off the ignition when not running is imperative.
