I know OEM tractor parts carries guages. I don't know how good they are.
On the 12v conversion... You'll need a 12v generator/alternator, a 12v starter and a ballast resistor for the coil.
Some folk say that a 6v starter will work on 12v for quite a while. There is risk there. I wouldn't go that route, but...
All the ballast resistor does for the coil is cut the voltage to 6v for the coil. Running a coil on straight 12v will burn it out FAST. You can get a 12v coil, but they're pricy.
I've seen a bunch of folk running GM alternators in place of generators. That's what I've got on my M. I've converted it to 1-wire operation with a special voltage regulator. I'm still not happy with it, but I've got other things going on right now.
Your ammeter won't know the difference between 12v and 6v.
