The brakes can be fixed by disassembling, cleaning ramps & rollers and scuffing the glaze off the surface of the disks.

Another trick is to reseal the brake drums to the gearcase with some silicone to keep the water out on the right side and the oil out on the left side if you have aux hydraulic valves.
Yes they can be made to work pretty well by the above methods and probably replacing the discs, about $40 per side for the discs.
If you have remote valves the left side is probably oil soaked. I helped my friend redo his 444 brakes last year, worked out well. I will be doing mine this year. They are still not as good as wet brakes , but work pretty well.

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?").
