The plate you discuss below does cover the side of the block. Under it is coolant. Removing it will display about 50% of the sides of the cylinders (one side of each) The engine is a dry sleeve type. It has cast in place cylinder bores that are lined with a thin sleeve. This makes simple rebuilding possible. The sleeves and cylinder walls can easily crack with the water you indicated was in it, causing your issue. I would pull the pan, and look at the bottom end for coolant coming out of a cylinder between the piston and sleeve. If it is, it may need to have major machine work done. Putting a new repair sleeve into the block after machining out much of the old cast in place cylinder is first. Then that sleeve is machined out, counter bored and honed for a new thin sleeve. Best of luck, I hope it is simple like a soft plug in the block leaking. JimN

To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
