My 826 diesel with 8000 hours was a real oil slurper when I got it. It had fresh Case IH SAE 30 in it. It used about 4-5 quarts that first season (about 45 hours???). At the first change, I switched to Rotella-T 15W-40 and the oil consumption gradually slowed to a trickle, maybe one and no more than two quarts a season (about 60-70 hours). The tractor is only used for heavy tillage on my small farm, so it's either working at 85 percent (or more) or it's parked. To be fair, I think working it hard has had something to do with the change in consumption by "un-gumming" the engine. The tractor had spent long years doing only light work, typically hauling wagons and with a sickle mower attached. Maybe a little hay work. So I'll give the Rotella the credit for half the improvement and the joy of field work the other half.
