You are on the right track. In practice, unless you use the tractor continuously, all day, for several days in a row, you can probably just leave it on high charge. The 3 brush generators tend to be self regulating as they loose efficiency as they turn faster. The "cutout" used with the 3 brush system has only one coil/contact assembly. All it does is disconnect the generator from the battery when the generator does not have enough voltage to charge the battery. Without it, the battery would discharge through the generator whenever the generator wasn't producing power (including when the engine is off). The "regulator" has the same contact as the cutout but has another one that breaks the field circuit when the voltage hits an upper limit, thus controlling how much voltage is put into the battery.
