Randy, If you have the standard H4 magneto, the above pictured position is correct. If the serial number on your mag has an 'X' stamped after the serial number, the slot needs to be 90° from this. Also, the X mags only have 15° advance which won't give you the same power at rated rpm. When I snapped the picture on this post, the timing gear cover was not in place and all marks were properly aligned.
