Here's a pic of the pump and the arrow is to the part of the body that contains either an O-ring or a seal, depending on which type of pump you have.
Mine had a somewhat faint stamped-part number on the body of the pump, and I had to scrape some paint to find it. My IH dealer had a rebuild-kit for the pump, and contains everything you need to re-do the pump.
Hydraulic oil that gets past that barrier will go forward and into the engine.
Here's the front of the pump and the 'driven' gear that runs off the cam gear. That gear is keyed, and comes off after the removal of the nut and washer. My washer was bent to hold the nut from turning, as seen by the arrow. The seal/ring goes around that shaft, internally.
Here's a pic of the whole shebang in pieces, (and the rebuild kit) with an arrow to the shaft. Word of caution, you have to make sure everything goes back in from where it came out, and in the correct orientation, so be meticulous when you take it apart.
The tricky part is checking the shaft by where the seal/o-ring sat on it. If a groove was worn into the shaft, you may need a speedi-sleeve or such, to get it back to tolerance or not cut-up the new seal/o-ring, so it won't leak after all your work.
Here's my old o-ring. Guess it had seen it's best days!
