The shift rails are on the bottom side of the rear end/trans. top. It sounds like there may be rust or crud in the shift rails. There are little "detents" or notches in the rails, with spring loaded balls that snap into the notches to hold it in the right gear. If one of the three rails has crud or rust, it might not work right. Adding oil shouldn't have made the problems worse though. Any way, it sounds like pulling the top off is in order.
Pretty straight foreward. Remove seat and steering post. Patience is a big help here. an engine lift or chain hoist to lift the top off is a help, although my dad and I used to do it by hand.
Good luck, there are no afterburners here, so dont get all fuzzed up looking for them.
