I wouldn"t want to be running hy-tran in a farmall A. Hy-tran is super expensive because it was designed to lubricate high torque gear trains while still being thin enough and having enough anti-foaming additives to work in high pressure hydraulic systems. Hytran isn"t necessarily better; just different. Gear lubricants are chosen based on the pitch-line velocity, surface finish, and the operating temps it is expected to run in. Slower speed gear trains with poorer surface finishes require a thicker oil, otherwise the lubricant will drip off the teeth before it ever reaches the mesh or the surface pits and peaks will be tall enough to "poke through" the oil film, wearing on the meshing gear (also called boundary layer lubrication). This isn"t a big deal for the later tractors (06 and up), as they have pressure lubrication supplementing the splash lubrication in the rear end with tubes to lubricate the rear end gears. Running hytran will result in a louder transmission that will have a tendency to coast forever until you can shift gears. Stick with 80-90 unless you put in ground gears and are planning to run road gear continuously. It won"t hurt anything unless you are doing 100% load pulling in first gear, but you will likely be happier with 80-90.

Today's Featured Article - When Push Comes to Shove - by Dave Patterson. When I was a “kid” (still am to a deree) about two I guess, my parents couldn’t find me one day. They were horrified (we lived by the railroad), my mother thought the worst: "He’s been run over by a train, he’s gone forever!" Where did they find me? Perched up on the seat of the tractor. I’d probably plowed about 3000 acres (in my head anyway) by the time they found me. This is where my love for tractors started and has only gotten worse in my tender 50 yrs on this “green planet”. I’m par
