The problem with electrical systems when compared to mechanical, is that you can"t just go by looks. You need to test it and work off the numbers, not just looks. I"ve seen several voltage regulators that were bad right out of the box, so I"d recommend going through John T"s checklist and test every part of the system. My bet is that the regulator probably just went out. I find that on average, we replace one every 2 to 4 years due to the moisture and constant vibration they see. I"d go through the checklist anyway though, or you might fry the replacement.
