Gene you should not have to take the battery out if the battery is any good to start with.
A battery that holds a charge will not freeze. Only dead batterys will freeze.
Kinda reminds me of my failing old neighbor. He calls me up after a storm to help him start the 300 to push snow. I said leave it set I will just blow out your drive for you.
When I got done I went to help start his tractor. It was dead. I flipped up the seat and the battery was gone. He said someone must have stoled it. Went to the basement to warm up and visit and in the corner I see a 6 volt battery. We never did put the battery back till he was gone 1 year later. We didn't think he should run the tractor any longer. Poor Guy.
I now own that 300 and what memories it gives when I use it. When I was a kid I use to sit on his lap and steer.
In the fall I check my antifreeze to make sure it is strong enough and do like Allan, shut them off and walk away.
