Well you could have broken it taking it apart. The bull gear must be taken off of the rear axle and that requires the pulling of the axle to let the gear move rearward enough to clear the inner part of the pinion cage. The silly things look like they should just come out, they do not without the bull gear removal. If prying was involved, it broke. Do not try to make it turn at all, you will damage the bearings pinion and bull gear if not break the main dif case.
