Had a 5" crack on the outside of a 216 ci 47 chev. pick-up motor. Stop drilled the crack and used some JB weld on it. That was 15 years ago and the old truck still is not leaking. I make sure I check the anti-freeze every year now. You might want to try the cheap fix and if it wont work get the welder out.
