Have the 54 SMTA all reassembled. Test drive and all was well except the TA. It seemed to take a second or two to engage, and then it would engage but seemed to be slipping a bit. Removed the top inspection plate. The clutch disc is at minimum 1/4 inch thick.Seems to engage well when I watched it , engine running, TA forward. T/a back there is about 80 thousandts clearance between plate and disc. I went through the adjustment step by step twice and no change. Is there some sort of load test, or say driving up to a stump or something to check the ramps, rollers, sprague? I'm hoping it's an adjustment problem I can't wrap my arms around.
